Ask a Kiwi under 30 where they last researched a purchase and the answer is increasingly not Google. It is ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini. These AI tools are quietly becoming the first stop for product research, service comparisons, and local recommendations, and they operate by completely different rules to traditional search. If your business is not showing up when someone asks an AI assistant "who is the best SEO agency in Auckland" or "what is the most reliable accountant for small business in NZ", you are missing a channel that is only getting bigger.
At MONSTERS_ we have been tracking citation behaviour across the major AI search tools for the last twelve months. The patterns are clear, and the playbook for getting cited is not what you would expect if your instinct is classic SEO. Here is what is working for NZ businesses right now.
Why AI search is a separate channel
Google's AI Overviews live inside Google. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Gemini are standalone products with their own retrieval systems, their own training data, and their own idea of what counts as a trustworthy source. Ranking well in Google does not automatically mean you will be cited in ChatGPT, and vice versa.
Each tool has a different flavour:
- ChatGPT pulls from its training data plus live web search via Bing. It leans toward well-known brands and authoritative publishers.
- Perplexity is built around real-time search with citations. It favours recent, specific, well-structured pages.
- Gemini integrates deeply with Google's index and Knowledge Graph. Structured data and Google Business Profile signals matter here.
- Claude (via its web search tool) favours credible, long-form content with clear authorship.
If you want to be visible across all of them, you need content that satisfies every system at once. That is harder than ranking in Google alone, but the businesses that get there are seeing a measurable lift in qualified enquiries.
Write for the question, not the keyword
Traditional SEO is built around keywords. AI search is built around questions. When someone asks Perplexity "what should I look for in a Wellington web designer", the model is scanning for pages that directly and confidently answer that exact question. A service page optimised for "Wellington web designer" with generic copy is not going to cut it.
The fix is to publish content structured around real questions, with answers in the first sentence of each section. For every service you sell, map the top ten questions a buyer asks before purchasing, then write a dedicated page or section for each. This approach overlaps heavily with our generative engine optimisation work, which is quickly becoming the dominant framework for AI visibility.
Credibility signals that AI models actually read
AI systems cannot interview your team or visit your office. They infer credibility from what is visible on the open web. The signals that consistently correlate with citation in our testing include:
- Named authors with real bios, ideally linked to LinkedIn profiles and other published work
- Original data: surveys, pricing benchmarks, case studies with real numbers
- Clear business identity: address, phone, opening hours, ABN or NZBN, and consistent NAP across the web
- Third-party mentions in news sites, industry publications, and local directories
- Reviews and testimonials on external platforms (Google, Trustpilot, industry-specific)
The fastest lift we see for NZ clients comes from a small, focused PR push plus a content library built on original data. That combination shifts you from "maybe cited" to "consistently cited" within a quarter.
Structured data is the translator
Schema markup tells AI models exactly what your content is. Without it, they are guessing. For AI search specifically, the schema types that matter most are:
- Organization and LocalBusiness schema on your homepage and contact page
- Article and BlogPosting on every piece of content, with a clear author property
- FAQPage for question-and-answer sections at the bottom of service pages
- Service schema for each distinct offering, with clear pricing or pricing ranges
- Review and AggregateRating where you have genuine customer feedback
Validate your markup with Google's Rich Results Test and Schema.org's validator before publishing. Broken schema is worse than no schema because it introduces uncertainty the model has to resolve.
Fresh beats famous
One of the most important differences between Google and AI search: recency matters more in AI. Tools like Perplexity actively weight recent content higher, and ChatGPT's live search pulls from the latest indexed pages. A post published this week about 2026 AI trends will often beat a five-year-old authority page in AI citations, even if the older page ranks higher in Google.
For NZ businesses this is an opportunity. You do not need years of backlinks to get cited. You need a steady cadence of current, specific, well-structured content on the topics your customers ask about. A post every two weeks, consistently maintained and updated, will outperform a neglected library of legacy pages.
Track what is actually happening
Most NZ businesses we talk to have no idea whether they are being cited in AI search. That is fixable. Practical steps:
- Run your top twenty customer questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini monthly. Note which sources get cited and whether you appear.
- Check your server logs for crawler traffic from GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended. Rising traffic from these user agents is a leading indicator.
- Use tools like Profound, Peec AI, or AthenaHQ to automate AI citation tracking across dozens of prompts.
- Watch referral traffic in GA4 from chat.openai.com, perplexity.ai, and gemini.google.com. It is still small but growing fast.
You cannot improve what you do not measure. Build an AI visibility dashboard alongside your traditional SEO reporting and review it monthly.
